A Guest and Some Quenching

Vinh had a visitor come by the workshop and watch for a while.  Then he had some questions, of course all asked in French so Im not to sure exactly what all they were talking about, but Im pretty sure it all had to do with knives and blacksmithing.  The guy was real nice and Vinh showed him a few things on the anvil.  He also brought us some homemade grape juice and he brought Vinh some wood for making handels.

Here Vinh shows him how to use the straight side of the hammer to move the metal out.  I think the English term is called "drawing"

He shows him hows it done on the other half of the 20mm, 2.3kg soon to be meat cleaver.

Then they both go at it...

Then we work on quenching the edge.  This is a process that is very sensitive and if it isn't done correctly, it can damage the knife and it will have to be redone.  You do it by heating the blade and then dipping just the edge in a misture of wax and oil; in some cases you can use water.  This one takes practice.  Its all a combination of temperature and time.

...and there you have it.
